So I didn't go to sleep last night. Monday, I was at work all day drafting Judicial orders for the Northern District of CA. I got back home, and wrote a 30 page memo for an Appellate Advocacy Competition. All. Night. Long. Finished at 7, ate a big breakfast with cup of strong coffee, went for a bicycle ride, and now I'm back at work.
Its going to be a LONG day. I'm going to need some entertainment. Let's play, "Whats your favorite 80s sports car?"
Since I'm feeling funky today, I'm going with the Mustang SVO. A turbocharged 4-cylinder in a lightened body? Talk about being ahead of its time! I love the boxy styling, I love the chrome pizza dish rims, I love the asymmetrical hood scoop.
Ok, your turn.

As someone who's also sleep deprived (albeit not nearly as sleep deprived as you. I got about 3 hours), I'm gonna go with the 3rd gen Camaro. I had an '84 Berlinetta and I loved it. Underpowered? Yes. Still fun to drive? Definitely! And, just like you said, the squared off edges and box headlights. Oh yes!

I thought you needed help sleeping. If so think about toyota products. Works for me every time, if I can't sleep I go to toyota.com and look up the corolla. Usualy end up sleeping on the chair infornt of the pc. I guess if that does not work, I will go rent out a corolla and drive it. Probably end up in a ditch, but it would put me to sleep for at least 48 hours. Actualy just mentioning toyota.....
Wake up? How about a nice 944 Turbo. Looks nice to me.

The best '80s sports car, in the best color.

I like the 959 and the Testarossa. If we're talking practical to actually own, then possibly some other choices.
Buick Reatta?
Wait, no, still not practical, though cheaper. Also not terribly sports.
Well, since the 924 continued in production through the 80s, I'll go with that, as it's a very 80s-ish car regardless of origin.
Edit to add: I think the lines are cleaner than the 944. Box fenders don't really do it for me.

Introduced in 1989. If that doesn't count, then I'll go with:
Introduced in the 70s, but didn't actually become seriously fast until the 80s, and stayed pretty much the same (just got more power) as the 80s went on.

Drool. I saw one of those at the Ralph Lauren car show they had the MFA in Boston a few years back. Everybody else was gawking at the old Bugattis, I stood in front of this and kept babbling about twin-turbos and all wheel drive.

Not to split hairs, but is a Camaro really a sports car? How close are we sticking to the definition?

First gen alltrac celica. 190hp 2.0L turbo 4, all wheel drive and rally pedigree.

Well it definitely was more of a "sports car" than a "muscle car" at the time. I do reject the handling concern as we know that, even in a "true" sports car, nothing American built can take a corner to save its life.
EDIT: Technically it is a "pony car", but then again so is the SVO used as the original example. Liberties have been taken.
